ESCAPISM
Curated by Sonja Beljić
Like the rooms we inhabit, spaces carry memory. They accumulate traces of human presence: movement, absence, routine, and repetition. Through light and spatial arrangement, the installation creates an atmosphere of control, stillness, and return. Escapism (E000) is an installation curated by Sonja Beljić, first presented at Gallery Stara Kapetanija. The work explores the cyclical nature of existence and questions what remains once an experience has passed. In the end, are memories all we truly have?
Constructed from six wooden platforms measuring 1 × 1 meter and illuminated from below with red light, the installation forms a rigid spatial grid stretching across the gallery floor. Elevated slightly above the ground, the dark geometric structures resemble both technological architecture and ritual staging. Their linear arrangement directs the viewer through the space toward a singular visual endpoint: a 2 × 2 meter gradient painting fixed in an endless transition. Together, these elements reinforce the work’s central proposition: the position where everything begins is also the position where it all ends.
